District 5

Community Built Playground at Schuette Park

The 5th Aldermanic District makes up the northern portion of Manitowoc’s southwest quadrant – roughly west of S. 21st St., north of Custer St., and south of the Manitowoc River. The District’s western border is the city limits.

The 5th District is arguably the city’s most blue-collar district and is home to the historic Custerdale neighborhood – the WWII Department of Defense housing project for the massive number of workers needed in the Manitowoc Shipyards for the assembly of the 28 submarines Manitowoc built for the war. Custerdale is the only place in America where you will find streets named after submarines.

District 5 is also home to Henry Schuette Park, the city’s fourth largest park at 67.48 acres. While Schuette Park is only the fourth largest, it is arguably the most diverse park in the city as it houses our only community built playground, along with hiking/cross country ski trails and thousands of feet of river frontage for fishing. The lower portion of the park (the portion without the playground) also allows citizens to bring their dogs along to enjoy the trails and wide open recreational spaces.
