Born and raised in Manitowoc, Matt graduated from Lincoln High School in 2000. He went on to receive his Associate’s Degree from UW-Manitowoc in 2003, also receiving the Student Leadership Award. While at UW-Manitowoc, Matt served on the Student Senate and was on of the campus’ representatives to the UW-Colleges Student Governance Council (the statewide student governing body for the 2-year campuses) and the United Council of UW Students, Inc.
As a representative to the UW Colleges SGC, Matt was selected by his peers to serve as the organization’s Legislative Affairs Director for the 2002-2003 academic year, overseeing the implementation of the organization’s lobbying efforts in Madison and statewide voter registration drive.
After graduating from UW-Manitowoc, Matt transfered to UW-Milwaukee where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 2007 with an emphasis in Political Science. In 2009, Matt also obtained a Professional Certificate in Paralegal Studies from Boston University.
Matt took time off from school in the mid-2000′s to work for a consumer and environmental protection organization, the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group (WISPIRG), as a campus organizer at UW-Milwaukee. In that role he taught students the necessary skills to effect change in their communities and effectively communicate with their elected officials.
Upon finishing his degree, Matt worked for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) as a Political Organizer charged with engaging the membership in a multitude of political action activities. This position also saw Matt dispatched to seven different states over six months as part of the organization’s expansive efforts in the historic Presidential Primaries of 2008.
After his time with AFSCME, Matt joined the mayoral campaign of now-Mayor Justin Nickels as the Campaign Manager, where he played an integral role in orchestrating the election of Mayor Nickels as the youngest full-time Mayor in the history of the State of Wisconsin.
Currently Matt works as a freelance, independent contractor specializing in message development, brand management, copywriting and some minor web design.
